International Workshop “Radiation and Cardiovascular Disease” Convened at Hiroshima Laboratory

Workshop participants

On February 5 and 6, 2013, an international workshop titled “Radiation and Cardiovascular Disease” was held at the Hiroshima laboratory. The issue of radiation effects on cardiovascular diseases (CVD; inclusive of stroke) has become increasingly important in recent years but many research questions remain unanswered. Thus, this workshop was organized with a view to discussing the latest reports on assessment of CVD risks due to radiation, findings from clinical studies on radiation and CVD based on biological mechanisms, and animal models for research on radiation and CVD.

After Dr. Waka Ohishi, Acting Chief of the RERF Department of Clinical Studies in Hiroshima, explained the aims and outline of the workshop, study findings were presented at the meeting venue by Dr. Fred A. Mettler Jr. (University of New Mexico), Dr. Kotaro Ozasa, Chief of the RERF Department of Epidemiology, Dr. Peter Jacob (Institute of Radiation Protection, Helmholtz Zentrum München), Dr. Nobuhiko Ban (Tokyo Healthcare University), Dr. Steven E. Lipshultz (University of Miami), Dr. Ikuno Takahashi, Research Scientist of the RERF Department of Clinical Studies, Dr. Fiona Stewart (The Netherlands Cancer Institute), Dr. Toru Nabika (Shimane University School of Medicine), and Dr. Norio Takahashi, Consultant to the RERF Vice Chairman’s Office. At the general discussion session held at the conclusion of the workshop, participants discussed possible future research directions for RERF, among other issues, and summarized the deliberations held during the two-day workshop.
